College Students Help Boilermaker Develop 2009 Design

 

August 19, 2008 (Utica, NY) - The Boilermaker Road Race announces that Michelle Duffy of Columbia Cross Roads, PA was the winner of its contest that determined the logo for the 2009 Boilermaker Road Race.

 

“Unlike most other road races, we change our race logo annually,” said Tim Reed, executive director of the Boilermaker. “This keeps our material and apparel fresh and it’s really exciting for runners to see the different designs each year that they participate.”

 

Instead of hiring a professional to develop the design like in years past, Boilermaker officials teamed up with graphic design students at Mohawk Valley Community College in search of next year’s logo. Scott D. Selden, assistant professor in the department of art at Mohawk Valley Community College, was approached by the Boilermaker and asked to provide students who would be willing to submit their art.

 

The participants in the contest were from Selden’s GC 210: Creative Topography class, consisting of second year graphic design students. There were a total of 15 young artists.

 

“The entire contest was really a win-win situation,” explained Selden. “It gave the students an opportunity to showcase their work and the Boilermaker received a great design at the same time. Michelle’s design was a neat, clean logo. It reads well and will be effective in multiple scenarios, such as on graphic t-shirts that the Boilermaker sells.”

 

The designs were judged based upon visual appeal, creativity, and cost efficiency. Boilermaker apparel bearing the new logo will be available in coming months at www.boilermaker.com.

 

 

The Boilermaker Road Race is the premier event of the National Distance Running Hall of Fame’s annual Hall of Fame Weekend. The race consistently attracts elite runners from all over the world, including Olympians and world record holders, and features distance running’s most enthusiastic fans, as well as the sport’s best post-race party hosted at The F.X. Matt Brewing Company.
