Local Youth Help Prepare for Boilermaker Weekend
June 27, 2008 (Utica, NY) - More than 40 elementary students from Jefferson School volunteered on Friday, June 20 to help the Boilermaker Road Race stuff goodie bags that will later be distributed to runners.
The fifth grade students took time out of their busy day to help stuff 15,000 bags consisting of healthy snacks and various items. Committee members Deb Schreck and Kim Lanza coordinated the event that took place at the Wal-Mart Distribution warehouse in Marcy. Those athletes participating in the 15K Race, 5K Run and 3 Mile Walk will pick up their goodie bags after receiving their race packets, prior to the events.
"It was so much fun to work with the children," said Jim Stasaitis, race director of the Boilermaker Road Race. "The teachers have instilled a great work ethic in their students. They all said that they would like to come back next year to volunteer and of course, we would love to have them!" The goodie bags will be distributed at the Masonic Care Community during the second weekend in July.
The Boilermaker Road Race is the premier event of the National Distance Running Hall of Fame’s annual Hall of Fame Weekend. The race consistently attracts elite runners from all over the world, including Olympians and world record holders, and features distance running’s most enthusiastic fans, as well as the sport’s best post-race party hosted at The F.X. Matt Brewing Company.
