Boilermaker Week Running Events Kick Off with New Road Runner Mile

July 7, 2008 (Utica, NY) - The Boilermaker Road Race announces that the inaugural Road Runner Mile, sponsored by Time Warner Cable, is set to begin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9 near Valley View Drive on the Parkway. This is the first year that the Boilermaker is hosting this competitive, invitation only event. The Road Runner Mile is a fast, straight-course race. Runners consist of the region's top young male and female student athletes.

This race is a change of pace from the other Boilermaker events because of its short, one-mile distance, according to Katie Luker, Boilermaker Road Runner Mile coordinator. "By including a miler in the Boilermaker running events, we are giving young, talented athletes a chance to receive Boilermaker-scoped recognition for their efforts."

"As a sponsor of this event, we couldn't be happier that our best local runners will have the opportunity to kick off Boilermaker week and claim their share of the spotlight," said Linda Henry, director of business operations for Time Warner's East Region/CNY. "We're excited to be a part of the Mohawk Valley's biggest and best-known event - The Boilermaker." The race will be covered on Time-Warner Cable Sports.

Nearly 40 runners will participate in this year's race. Some notable runners include: Kelsey Peek from Whitesboro, Heather Vroman from Utica, Christine Mulvihill from Remsen, Garrett Parker from Whitesboro, Ryan Millar from New Hartford, and Chris Stogsdill from Marcellus and Boilermaker scholarship winner Meagan Kobielski from Holland Patent. "We invite anyone interested in cheering on the runners to join us along the course and at the finish near the Parkway tennis courts," Katie Luker, coordinator of the Road Runner Mile, said.

"This is a great way to highlight the young athletes in Utica and surrounding areas," said Katie Luker, coordinator of the Road Runner Mile. "This race promises to be full of excitement. I'm pleased to be a part of this wonderful event."

The Boilermaker Road Race is the premier event of the National Distance Running Hall of Fame’s annual Hall of Fame Weekend. The race consistently attracts elite runners from all over the world, including Olympians and world record holders, and features distance running’s most enthusiastic fans, as well as the sport’s best post-race party hosted at The F.X. Matt Brewing Company.
