Boilermaker Announces 2008 Scholarship Winners
June 25, 2008 (Utica, NY) - The Boilermaker Road Race has announced winners for its fourth annual scholarship. The high school recipients will be honored during breakfast at the Radisson Hotel on Friday, June 6, 2008 at 8 a.m.
Richard Hunt, Boilermaker Scholarship coordinator, along with Tim Reed, executive director of the Boilermaker, will present the scholarships to four local high school student/athletes. The winners will receive prize plaques, a $1000 check, and a free entry into the 2008 Boilermaker 15K. Jonathan Szczesniak of Whitesboro, Christine Mulvihill of Remsen, Jeff Blazek of New Hartford, and Meagan Kobielski of Holland Patent are the 2008 scholarship winners.
Jonathan Szczesniak, a senior at Whitesboro High School, has earned the Outstanding Achievement in Distance Running award. Szczesniak won the Section III Class A Cross Country Championship in 2005 and 2006 and completed the 2007 Boilermaker in 60:14. He plans on attending Hamilton College in the fall.
Christine Mulvihill, soon to graduate from Remsen Central School, will also receive the Outstanding Achievement in Distance Running award. Mulvihill won the Section III Class D Cross Country Championship in 2007, won 15 Section III titles in track and field, and now holds numerous school records. She will attend Canisius College this fall.
Jeff Blazek, a senior at New Hartford High School, won the Outstanding Commitment in Distance Running award. Blazek was named to the First Team TVL All-Star team in both indoor and outdoor track and was New Hartford's MVP winner in 2006 and 2007. He will attend Nazareth or Utica College this September.
Meagan Kobielski from Holland Patent High School also has earned the Outstanding Commitment in Distance Running award. She placed seventh in the TVL Cross Country Championship and 22nd in the Section III meet. Her coach, John Reilly, considers her the most positive leader in the history of the school's cross country team. Kobielski plans to attend the University of Buffalo in the fall.
