Boilermaker Announces Volunteer of the Year
August 20, 2008 (Utica, NY) - Boilermaker Road Race officials have announced that the Volunteer of the Year Award has been presented to Scott Hughes, assistant transportation and parking coordinator.
Hughes' main responsibility is the organization and communication of the available transportation and parking for all the Boilermaker runners. He works closely with local and state officials to ensure that all runners arrive safely and on time for the start of the races and make it back to their vehicles after the post-race festivities.
"I am very humbled [to win this award] because I truly enjoy what I do," Hughes said. "The award really belongs to all the volunteers. Each of us plays an important role on many different levels for the Boilermaker to be so successful."
Hughes, general manager at Human Technology Corporation in Utica, has run in 19 Boilermakers and has been a committee member for 14 years. He became a volunteer as a way to become more involved in local events and to give back to the community.
"Scott's unwavering dedication and selfless attitude made him an obvious choice for Volunteer of the Year," said Tim Reed, executive director. "He constantly places the needs of the organization above his own and has a knack for always paying attention to the smallest details."
Hughes, a Herkimer native, is also a member and officer in the Herkimer Elks Lodge. He says that he is eager to continue volunteering for the Boilermaker in the future.
The Boilermaker Road Race is the premier event of the National Distance Running Hall of Fame’s annual Hall of Fame Weekend. The race consistently attracts elite runners from all over the world, including Olympians and world record holders, and features distance running’s most enthusiastic fans, as well as the sport’s best post-race party hosted at The F.X. Matt Brewing Company.
