The Boilermaker 15K presented by Excellus BlueCross BlueShield is the premier event of Boilermaker Weekend. This world-renowned race is often referred to as the country’s best 15K. The Boilermaker 15K is recognized for its entertaining yet challenging course and racing’s best post-race party, hosted by the F.X. Matt Brewing Company, featuring Saranac beer and a live concert!

With plenty of water support, strong attention to medical detail, and crowd support like no other race, the Boilermaker 15K is an event worth training and traveling for and should be on every runner’s “must-do” list.

Distance & Course:
The course is 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) and was USATF recertified in 2024. The course is marked in miles with ample official water and aid stations. Streets are closed to traffic for 2 hours 30 minutes. The Boilermaker is a USATF-sanctioned event.

Safety:
The course is restricted to registered runners and official race personnel. Walkers, dogs, skateboards, in-line skates, roller skates, bicycles, and baby joggers/strollers are prohibited. We strongly discourage the use of headphones. The Boilermaker is a smoke-free event.

Can I still register for the Boilermaker after it sells out?

Registration for both the 15K presented by Excellus BlueCross BlueShield and the 5K presented by Utica National Insurance Group is to be announced.

In the event that both races are sold out, here are your options:

Find someone who wishes to transfer their 15K or 5K bib! Many people post in our Community Facebook Group looking to transfer bibs. Please keep in mind that ALL bib transfers MUST be done through RunSignUp for medical and safety reasons. Anyone caught running with a bib not legitimately transferred risks being banned from future Boilermaker events. Instructions: bit.ly/BMTransfer

When is the Boilermaker?

The Boilermaker is always run on the second Sunday of July. The date for the 2027 Boilermaker Road Race is Sunday, July 11, 2027.

The 5K Race starts at 7:15 AM, the Wheelchair Race starts at 7:45 AM, and the 15K Race starts at 8 AM.

Can someone else pick up my Boilermaker bib number?

Yes. Someone else may pick up your bib number, but they must present a note from you authorizing them to do so, a copy of your confirmation email, or a copy of your government-issued photo ID (license, passport, etc.).

How & where do I pick up my Boilermaker 15K race packet (bib) and race incentives?

Packet pick-up will be held on Friday, July 9, 2027 from Noon until 7:00 pm and Saturday, July 10, 2027 from 8:00 am until 4:30 pm at the MVHS Health & Wellness Expo on the MVCC Utica Campus located at 1101 Sherman Drive, Utica, NY 13501.

In order to pick up your race packet and incentives, you must show photo ID or your confirmation email.

There is limited race day packet pick-up available for the 15K presented by Excellus BlueCross BlueShield. Race-day packet pick-up will open at 6 AM and will have a hard close at 7:45 AM in order to ensure a proper start to the race. It will take place on the east side of Human Technologies near the start line. After your run, visit the Glass Pick-Up booth located in the lower garages at the Post-Race Party to claim your pint glass!

Where can I park for the Boilermaker 15K Race?

There is no special reserved parking, so check your options early!

Start Line Parking: There is some street parking near the start line in the area surrounding ECR International and near the finish line at the FX Matt Brewing Company. Space is limited to public streets.

Finish Line Parking: There are new parking options available for runners and spectators near the finish area. The map below highlights a parking garage and several lots that may have parking available on race morning. If parking in the garage, please be mindful not to park in spots designated for Mohawk Valley Health Systems staff.

Runners can then make their way to a shuttle bus to take them to the 15K start. Shuttles are available on the corner of State Street and Court Street and at the back of the Post-Race Party area on Whitesboro Street. For more details on 15K shuttle times and locations, please click here.

Parking options for the 15K race

Will there be a bag check available?

Yes, for the 15K only. A bag check truck will be located along Dwyer Avenue adjacent to the 15K Start line.

Participants wishing to use this benefit can bring their own clear plastic bag or use provided clear plastic bags, available race morning at the bag check truck.

Can I walk the Boilermaker 15K, 5K, or Erie Canal events?

No, walkers are not allowed!

All Boilermaker races, including the 15K presented by Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, 5K presented by Utica National, or Erie Canal Races are timed events with strict cut-off times:

15K: 2 hours 30 minutes
5K: 45 minutes
Erie Canal 10-Miler: 2 hours 30 minutes

Anyone interested in walking can register for the Boilermaker Walk that takes place at Mohawk Valley Community College on the Saturday before the Boilermaker.

Can I take a shuttle to the start of the Boilermaker 15K?

Yes! Birnie Buses will transport runners from the finish area to the 15K Race start line from 5:30 AM to 7:45 AM. Arrive early for the shuttles. Don’t plan on taking the last shuttle to the start. Pick-up locations are:

Near the Finish Line at the corner of Court Street and State Street
Near the rear of the Post Race Party area on Whitesboro Street
Near the Northeast corner of Columbia and State Street

Can I transfer my Boilermaker bib (registration) to another runner?

Yes. The Transfer Process will open at noon on Saturday, May 1st, 2027. To complete a transfer via your RunSignUp account:

Go to runsignup.com, click on “Sign In,” and enter your email and password to sign in.
Click on “Profile” from the drop-down menu in the upper right-hand corner.
Find the event you wish to transfer and select “Manage Registration.”
Select “Transfer to Another Runner” (located either at the top of the page or in the menu).
Confirm the event information and input the recipient’s full name and email address.
Select the Transfer Type: “Registration Gift” (no refund given to the original registrant and recipient will not need to pay) or “Registration Transfer” (refund given to the original registrant upon confirmed payment from the new recipient).

Please note: per RunSignUp, the cost of a transferred registration will be the current cost at the time of transfer, not what the original registrant paid.

Online transfers must be started by Saturday, July 3, 2027 at 11:59pm, and any in-progress transfers must be completed by Monday, July 5, 2027 at 11:59pm.

Bib Transfers at the Expo

Limited transfers may be available onsite at the Health & Wellness Expo on July 9 from 12-7pm and July 10 from 8am – 3pm. No transfers will be possible after 3pm on Saturday, July 10.

You must have written consent from original registrant to initiate a bib transfer at the Expo. All transfers done at the Expo will be gift transfers meaning the original registrant will not receive a refund and the new registrant will not pay a fee. See the Solutions Desk at the Expo for more information.

There are no race-day transfers.

Avoiding Scams

ALL legitimate bib transfers will take place via RunSignUp. Absolutely NO legitimate bib transfer will occur via Venmo, CashApp, Zelle, PayPal, or other third-party payment platform.

If someone asks you to pay them directly, it is likely a scam. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or to confirm a transfer is legitimate.

What comes with my Virtual Boilermaker registration?

Virtual Boilermaker

All virtual runners receive an authentic race bib and a commemorative pint glass for their event. Virtual 15K runners also receive a finisher’s medal and Virtual 5K runners receive a finisher’s pin.

Virtual registration also includes all shipping fees (U.S. addresses only). Registration is to be announced.

Is there a waiting list for the Boilermaker Road Race?

Yes! As soon as each race reaches its caps, you will need to opt in to be placed on the waiting list. You can sign up for the waiting list by going to RunSignUp and following the prompts.

If a spot opens up, you will be notified via e-mail, and you will have 48 hours to register from when the e-mail was sent. If you do not register within 48 hours, you will be removed from the list. The Boilermaker is not responsible if your e-mail notice goes to your spam folder.

How can I register?

The only way to register is online through RunSignUp:

Registration for Boilermaker Road Race 15K, 5K, Wheelchair or Virtual events, and Boilermaker Walk, will be announced.

Registration will stay open until each event reaches its cap. There is a waiting list for 15K race only.

There are NO paper applications available for any Boilermaker events.

Transportation

15K Shuttles

Pre-race 15K shuttles will transport runners from the finish area to the 15K Race start line from 5:30 AM to 7:45 AM. Arrive early for the shuttles. Don’t plan on taking the last shuttle to the start. Pick-up locations are:

What is the post-race shuttle schedule for the Boilermaker?

15K:

Post-race 15K shuttles will run from 8:45am until 12:30pm, departing from Whitesboro Street, across from the Sculpture Space.

These buses are only for runners who parked near the 15K Start Line. Buses will only stop near the 15K Start, near Culver Ave. and Dwyer Ave.

5K:

Post-race 5K shuttles will run from 8am until 12:30pm, departing from Whitesboro Street, across from the Thea Bowman House.

These buses are for runners who parked near Murnane Field OR at ConMed. Shuttles will stop at both locations.

Please take care to ensure you are on the correct bus!

Where Should I Be Dropped Off for the 15K?

We’ve joined forces with the New York State Department of Transportation to create a dedicated drop-off lane on Route 5S eastbound to enable runners to be dropped off safely without disrupting the flow of traffic.

The map below illustrates the drop-off lane that will be available. The right lane of Route 5S east will be coned off; the left lane will be reserved for through traffic. Drivers dropping runners off will follow signage and pull into the right lane into the coned-off area. Once the runner exits the vehicle, the driver will continue to the end of the drop-off chute to rejoin traffic on Route 5S.

As a part of this effort, the Culver Ave. ramp off of Route 5S (both eastbound and westbound) will be closed.

Who can use Boilermaker shuttles?

The Birnie Bus shuttles are for registered Boilermaker runners only. Spectators and volunteers cannot use shuttles.

Are there shuttles between the 5K and 15K Race starts?

No! If you have someone running the 5K race you must drop them off. The 5K Birnie Bus shuttle stop at ConMed is a great spot to drop the 5K runners and head to where you are going to park for the 15K race.

Drug Policy

The Boilermaker Road Race has a zero-tolerance drug policy.

Athletes who participate in Boilermaker events may be subject to drug testing. Athletes with positive drug test results will forfeit any prize money and will be disqualified from the event in which such athlete participated.
